Russell E. Warren Memorial Shelter at Maramec Spring Park
The Gateway Chapter of Trout Unlimited and The James Foundation have partnered together to build a new picnic shelter at Meramec Spring Park in honor of a very generous, posthumous donation from Gateway Trout Unlimited member Russell E. Warren.
The shelter is 60 feet x 28 feet and located near the lower parking area of the park in a grassy section called “Fisherman’s Grove.” The site is very close to parking and the trout stream which makes it ideal for groups and families that want to fish while they socialize. The rustic post and beam construction is similar to other shelters in the park and will eventually include picnic tables, BBQ grills, water, electric and a fire pit.
The total cost of the shelter was approximately $60,000. Gateway Trout Unlimited donated $30,000 for the project and The James Foundation agreed to match that donation to complete the project. The Russell E. Warren Shelter will include a plaque commemorating Russell’s very generous gift and will serve as a gathering area for Gateway TU meetings, fishing events, and hands-on educational events for both youth and adult outings.
In the spirit of volunteering and charity, Gateway TU members offered to stain the oak beams and landscape the site after the construction. Gateway TU is also donating a commemorative plaque for the site. Active Gateway TU members will be allowed to reserve the shelter free of cost throughout the year.
To make reservations, call the James Foundation office at 573-265-7124.
We look forward to celebrating the outdoors and clean, cold-water conservation at the new Russell E. Warren Memorial Shelter!
